Rebecca Bennett (Pattie), Lachlan Murphy (Eddie), Deb Welch (Rachel) and
Chris Young (Clive) Season’s Greetings is a black, bitter-sweet, though often farcical comedy about a dysfunctional family Christmas in a middle class English suburban house in the early 1980s. Christmas is at Belinda and Neville’s house and they have invited their family for a traditional yuletide celebration. Guests for the party are; Neville’s exhausted sister Phyllis; her faded husband Bernard - a doctor whose annual puppet shows are the stuff of legend and terror to both young and old alike; Neville’s slightly ditzy friends Eddie and his pregnant wife Pattie; uncle Harvey, a slightly senile retired security guard and a television-addict; Belinda’s lonely sister, Rachel and finally Clive, a young amorous writer and friend of Rachel. The full house creates a claustrophobic recipe for fun, frivolity and festive sexual tension all with classic acerbic Ayckbourn dialogue. Themes running through the play include the loss of passion in marriage and the tragedy inherent in the achievement of only mediocrity in life. Merry Christmas! |
