Local theatre companies come and go with monotony and I wonder if our predecessors in Geelong Repertory ever wondered if the company they founded in 1932 would pass the three score years and ten milestone. Well, we did and now ten years after that occasion we will celebrate our eightieth birthday in 2012. What do we have in store for you? In the last few years we have presented a mix of dramas, comedies and period plays and even an eightieth birthday will not change that. However in an eightieth year it seems appropriate to devote some time to memory, to looking back, to reminiscing and that is what we have done.

The year will begin with a riotous comedy set just prior to World War I, The Thirty Nine Steps. This will be followed by Dancing at Lughnasa (Loo-nasa). Let me assure you that this play which is set in 1936 and is the third Irish play at Rep in as many years, was submitted through regular channels and its selection has nothing to do with the fact that the President of Repertory happens to come from the land of Saints and Scholars! The third play of the year is the ever popular Romeo and Juliet. Next is Our Town a heart-warming American classic set between the turn of the twentieth century and the outbreak of World War I. Our last play of 2012 is The Lady in the Van, a relatively modern play by comparison with the others, but one which is devoted to the reminisces of the playwright who let an eccentric elderly lady park her van in his driveway for a few weeks in the nineteen seventies. She stayed 15 years.

Please visit us at the Woodbin in 2012 and enjoy what’s on offer during Rep’s eightieth year and I look forward to seeing you there.
