Written in 1981, Whale Music was the play that kickstarted the career of award winning British playwright/actor/screen writer/director, the late Anthony Minghella CBE, probably best remembered for writing the screen play and directing The English Patient, for which he won an Academy Award. Caroline a pregnant, young, unmarried woman goes away to the island where she was born and spends her pregnancy with a group of outspoken woman friends while she considers her options – an abortion, to keep the child and raise it alone or with her lesbian friend Kate, even though she is not gay, or to give the child up for adoption. There are lots of good character roles to read from this interesting group of women, Kate – a lesbian former school teacher and Caroline’s best friend, Fran – a traditional wife and mother, D – who has only a letter for a name, wears a nose-ring and finds gardening tool ads sexist, Stella – Caroline’s wisecracking landlady – there are eight of them in all and they all have their own issues. Interested? - come and join us a the Woodbin Theatre for this reading suggested by Cherie Mills. Read or listen, no pressure. Bloke or Sheilah – we’re not sexist – there is a chance to read for everyone. The VDL (Victorian Drama League) Awards were held in Melbourne last weekend. Geelong Rep’s entry was The Popular Mechanicals, directed by Peter Jukes. In keeping with previous years Rep received a number of nominations:
And the winners were!
Congratulations to all the nominees and winners. You done us proud! A pertinent comment from Producer, Chris Morton, to the 800 or so assembled thespians was that the only problem was that virtually no one in the room had seen the production that took out so many awards. He urged them to make the trip down the highway to see us. People in Geelong think nothing of going up to Melbourne to see a show, but it doesn’t seem to work in reverse. Melbournites seem to think that Geelong is a far-off country needing a week’s holiday to visit! Hopefully they are starting to realise that they’re missing out on some first rate theatre down here. If we keep taking out major awards we must be doing something right! Congratulations again to all involved with this wonderful production. It may not have been everybody’s cup of tea but at least we had the opportunity to see it. 18/11/2009 MONDAY PLAYREADING NOVEMBER PLAYREADING - KEEPING MUM BY CAROLYN STUART Carolyn is a freelance writer from Goondiwindi in Queensland and a member of Playlab and the Queensland Writers Centre. This play shows something of the bizarre yet workable dynamic of a mother's group with its mix of women who really share nothing in common apart from the fact that they've all produced babies around the same time of the year. Conflicts develop as Jane's life begins unravelling at the same time as pregnant Liz joins the group. Tension builds at subsequent meetings and comes to a head at a disastrous birthday party for Jane's son Winston. Lines are drawn as they all struggle to help one another and Liz is due any day. The play shows something of the humour, conflict and support that can be found amongst Mothers. This is the sort of humour for everyone - it is not just a play for women - and there are plenty of opportunities to read. When: Monday 30th November at 7pm for a 7.30pm. sharp start Where: The Woodbin Theatre, 15 Coronation Street, Geelong West (just down the road from Irish Murphy's) Bring: A plate of food to share at interval and a $2 gold coin.
