PLAY READING - WOMAN OF FIRE AND LIGHT
Scenes from the life of Emilie Du Chatelet – Scientist, Mathematician, Philosopher – mistress and long time companion to the poet, Voltaire.
Woman of Fire and Light is Barwon Heads playwright Pat Craddock’s first full length play adults. Pat’s main interests in life are painting and writing. A former VCE and English Literature teacher Pat taught creative writing and enjoys writing fiction herself. Pat wrote many short plays and sketches for school performances and has also written poetry, short stories and a novel. Pat and her husband run a small creative desk top- publishing company.
Woman of Fire and Light came to be written after Pat read a chance reference to the 18th century mathematician and scientist Emilie de Chatelet in the preface to a copy of Voltaire’s Candide. Emilie was for some 17 years , the mistress of the celebrated poet, playwright and man of letters, Voltaire. Pat found this woman fascinating. In an age where women were expected to be subservient and decorative she shone with the fierce light of intelligence. She was opinionated, indomitable and possessed of a fiery temper. She refused to accept the “womanly” role that society had mapped out for her. For Pat, Emilie, was truly a Woman of Fire and Light..

READING - THE LADY AND THE LITTLE DOG
One of Anton Chekhov's most famous short stories adapted for the stage by local playwright Janet Brown. The Lady and the Little Dog is the melancholy tale of an affair between an unhappily married man and a young married woman, who meet whilst on holiday in the Russian sea-side town of Yalta.
Originally written in 1899, is it relevant or even of interest today? That's the test for this adaptation - a work in progress and written as a monologue for Dmitri (Steven Georgiadis).

During a visit to his apartment his agent reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore which leads to a seance to summon his ghost. From the moment Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew's life is no longer his own.
Barrymore fortified with champagne and ego presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfil his actors destiny. The laughs are non stop as Andrew wrestle with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in Central Park..

Caroline a pregnant, young, unmarried woman goes away to the island where she was born and spends her pregnancy with a group of outspoken woman friends while she considers her options – an abortion, to keep the child and raise it alone or with her lesbian friend Kate, even though she is not gay, or to give the child up for adoption. There are lots of good character roles to read from this interesting group of women, Kate – a lesbian former school teacher and Caroline’s best friend, Fran – a traditional wife and mother, D – who has only a letter for a name, wears a nose-ring and finds gardening tool ads sexist, Stella – Caroline’s wisecracking landlady – there are eight of them in all and they all have their own issues. Interested? - come and join us a the Woodbin Theatre for this reading suggested by Cherie Mills. Read or listen, no pressure.
