THE WRITE STUFF PLAYWRITING COMPETITION | SEASON LAUNCH | PLAY SUBMISSION | LIFE MEMBERS | ARTI GRAS Friends, Romans, Countrymen, send us your scripts! Geelong Repertory Theatre Company produces five plays each year and offers patrons a varied and interesting program. The choice of plays and directors depends on YOU! Would you like to either direct a play or suggest a play that you would like to see come to life on the Repertory stage? We seek plays from a range of genres; classics, modern and not so modern Australian plays, comedies, musicals, one-act plays, absurd theatre and historical dramas. If you wish to direct at Rep in 2011 please click on Play Selection Guidelines and Production Budget for more details or contact Bryan Eaton at brymo2@bigpond.com or 5255 2977 for information. Send a copy of the play, along with a letter outlining your concept for its production, to: Geelong Rep Play Selection Committee It is helpful for us to have information about your vision, so set design ideas, style of acting, previous directing or acting experience and perhaps reasons why you think the play would suit the Woodbin are the sorts of things you could include in the accompanying letter. Alternatively, you may know of one or more plays that you would love to see included in the 2011 season but have no desire to direct. We would also welcome your suggestions and aim to match suitable plays with aspiring or accomplished Directors. We need to receive your submission by 30th June 2010. Give it a go! Download Submitting a Play form today! The aim of the Play Selection Committee (PSC) is to select five plays for production in the forthcoming year. The chosen plays will fit within a diverse program, encompass a variety of genres and offer Woodbin patrons a spectrum of theatrical experiences that cover a range of issues. In the choice of play, the PSC will consider: o The style of play o Its public appeal o The feasibility of staging the play at the Woodbin Theatre o Geelong Rep’s wish to encourage new works o The era in which the play was set o The geographical location of the play and the nationality of the characters o Whether the work will broaden opportunities for actors in the areas of role, age, gender and skill. In the choice of directors, the PSC will consider: o The requirement for good communication skills by the Director o The need to retain a balance in the gender and age range of Directors o The Director’s resourcefulness o The need to encourage new Directors o The Director’s vision for the play in terms of the overall production, technical and artistic challenges, and whether or not the play can be produced within a specific budget. o Demonstrable experience of the Director in the performing arts o The commitment by the Director to both their own project and the ideals of the Geelong Repertory Theatre Company. The PSC will: o Read all proposed plays. o Consider the limitations of the Woodbin in terms of lighting, set, special effects and available resources. o Assess all prospective works and directors against the criteria listed above for choice of play and directors. o Remember the need to generate a balanced and yet diverse program. Budget information for directors We expect Directors to be frugal and inventive. In order to keep Geelong Repertory financially viable, recent experience has shown that expenses incurred by the Director should not exceed approximately $1500. Within this budget the Director is expected to pay for set materials (wood, paint, scrim, etc), props, wardrobe items, and other production expenses, such as lights that need replacing or music that has to be purchased. Directors are not responsible for the cost of scripts, programs, posters or royalties (approximately $100, $700, $250 and $1500 respectively, based on 2008 figures). If you have a specific request about the budget, please talk to your producer or a committee member before committing to the expenditure.
